“I started drinking and partying as a sophomore in high school. Starting around that time, I had a long list of abusive boyfriends and used a lot of drugs. During my years of addiction, I lost many friends and hurt my family quite a bit. I also faced the loss of part of my memory and have had health issues ever since that time.

When I got pregnant with my son, I chose to get sober. I promised myself I would not go back to using drugs for myself but also for him. I found it important to keep myself busy with work and school and hobbies. Unfortunately, my son’s father could not get sober like I did. Eventually, he and his best friend overdosed and passed away.

Today, I am going to school and almost have my Associates degree. I have no problem getting to work on time and staying all day long. I maintain my recovery by staying close with my family and paying attention to my emotions. I stay away from anything that might trigger my behaviors. My past rehab counselor has been invaluable and my family is my main source of help. But most of all, being a mother is amazing and my son keeps me going every day."
