Topics: Self-Injury/Depression

“My sister was involved in self injury for two years as a result of her severe depression. While it was happening, I felt helpless and never thought my sister would ever get better. The belief that family always comes first was taught to me at a very early age, so her experience impacted our very close family.  My sister’s situation really had an effect on me especially because she’s my little sister and I felt like I had failed her.

I found out a year into her battle and was involved in trying to help her get better.  When my sister asked for help, my mom took her to our family doctor and then to a psychologist. She came to me to talk about things as well.  As she was trying to get better we had to be very supportive of her.  She got more involved with cheerleading and track and field which gave her an outlet and boosted her self esteem. Now, she stays healthy by relying on her friends and family and by leaning on school activities.  Today she is doing a lot better with her disorder, but is still battling with her depression and self esteem.”
