Topics: Alcohol Abuse/Binge Drinking

“My first experience with alcohol happened when I was 15 years old. I didn’t like the feeling of losing control, yet I kept doing it after that first time. I continued to engage in my disease for another 12 years. During this time, I continuously lied and violated trust with my family. I was not able to keep commitments with anyone. As a result of my drinking, I lost important and valuable friendships with people that were close to me. I was also married and divorced and am now a single mother.  I also have financial difficulties and am deep in  debt.

It took 12 years before I got a point I could finally asked my mother for help.  She went online and found an AA meting for me to go to. My first year of recovery was painful, terrifying and difficult. I am a part of a 12 step recovery program that has taught me different ways of coping with life. I utilized a sponsor, worked the 12 steps, went to a LOT of meetings and did not drink.  Today, maintaining my recovery is the largest aspect of my life. My family is extremely supportive of my recovery and wants the best for me. I have also made a host of friends that are my strength and support in recovery.

Since I have gotten sober I have had the opportunity for many life experiences. I have discovered that there are other ways of dealing and coping with life situations. From day one of sobriety to today, my life has progressively gotten better. I have found happiness and satisfaction in my life that I had been looking for all along.”
